Reflection Essay 1/11/2023
During the 5th week of lectures and tutorials, the class embarked on a journey on exploring the ins and outs of building a lesson plan and the components that make a lesson plan. I have learnt about lesson plans from Dr Sharimila's previous module in my first academic year but this time, it was interesting to learn more in depth about the foundation that effective and efficient lesson plans are built upon.
Throughout the lecture that consisted of learning about major and minor components of lessons plans, but the one that stood out to me was trying to grasp all 30 components and 8 key points. It was honestly amazing to see Si Tao memorising all the components in such. short time. It inspired me to work harder in my knowledge and best effort into my studies.
During the small group discussion with my fellow course mates Manishaa and Wyai Hon, I was really working my brain to understand and absorb the new information. It was intriguing to witness how different everyone's thought processes were and how diverse my friends' brains were. I especially enjoy group discussions during tutorials as I person who's always excited to share and learn from my classmates. I think having and developing my social intelligence is important as we can learn from one another. I'm always learning how to improve my critical thinking skills and strategically improving my understanding of knowledge to improve as a future educator.
Reflecting on my tutorial and lectures, I am reminded of how fast the world can change within a few years or even months. The art of lesson planning and it components may be fundamental but the content within the lessons can change and grow with the times.
After the lecture, I was curious about how beneficial group discussions could be. From a short Google search, I found that small group discussions like ones I had with Wyai Hon and Manishaa can improve social learning. Bandura's Social Learning Theory (1977) draws attention to the role of interaction between peers in a learning and collaborative environment. Within the theory, Bandar also found that small group discussions could promote diverse interactions thus enhancing out understanding of new information. In relations to SIOP, SIOP encourages cooperative learning strategies that promote social interaction and collaborative learning among students (Echevarria, et. al., 2008).
Like in this blog, I think reflecting on our actions as future educators in important. According to the concept of reflection practice, introduced by Schön in 1983, educators have to reflect, adapt and enhance their knowledge to effectively grow and improve providing effective instruction.
In conclusion, Dr. Lina's lecture and tutorial provided a profound understanding of lesson planning and its intricate components. It was a stimulating experience that encouraged critical thinking and introspection, highlighting the evolving nature of education and the necessity of educators to continuously adapt and grow.
