My Reflection Essay 4/10/2023
From my classes on 2nd of October 2023 to 4th of October 2023, I had an introductory session for my three core modules. They are Teaching and Learning Strategies, Teaching Language Across the Curriculum and Literature in the Language Classroom. These modules were taught by Dr Too, Dr Sharimila and Dr Lina.
From the cookies and snacks from Dr Lina’s modules to the collection of poetry to be analysed from Dr Too’s module, I looked around the BA64 classroom to find my course mates reeling with excitement. I was excited to learn more about the integration of language in the classrooms as well as understanding the different learning and teaching strategies that can be implemented in my future classrooms as an educator. However, I did subconsciously feel a sense of nervousness overcome me as I wondered about the heavy responsibility I will eventually carry as a teacher.
The lecture and tutorial sessions throughout my week of learning reminded me of the variety of techniques and styles of teachings my teachers used when I was in high school or even primary school. The way my teachers had passion for teaching students fact-filled content impacted me, influencing me to see a path in teaching.
A theory that easily comes to mind when attending my classes is constructivism. The constructivism theory asserts that students learn based on their prior knowledge and build upon prior experiences to introduce onto their schemas (Mcleod, 2023). I think about this theory because the new academic year lecture content often highlights knowledge I had previously gained from my first year of my Bachelors. As a future educator, I hope to be able to impact my students with meaningful content that would influence them in their future endeavours.
From my three lectures and tutorials, I think I have learnt an important lesson. The environment where students learn should not only be surface level learning and memorising but should also be engaging, understanding, creative and so much more. I am very excited for my next weeks of classes. To be able to learn more about what my future entails is a great privilege.
Signing off,

Joy this is a very concise refection. Constructivism is good point to emphasize in learning. I suggest you relate more our new learned theories. For example, Hierarchy needs theory. metacognition theory or four steps of teaching thinking tool. It is an invisible tool that you can utilize both in the process of planning and conducting teaching in classroom.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy reading your writing because it has a friendly and interesting tone.
ReplyDeleteI truly agree with your assertion that the learning environment plays a crucial role in the education of diverse students. As Adesua (2014) emphasizes, it serves as a powerful and effective tool for socialization. Dr. Lina offered students refreshments at breaks, for instance, to promote relaxing atmosphere and combat the tiredness brought on by class.
To my mind. The Maslow theory of the hierarchy of needs, which stated that people must first tend to their basic physiological needs before focusing on higher-order wants like learning, can be supplemented with this method (Hopper, 2020).

Thanks, Sharon, for your in-depth comments. yes, The Maslow theory of the hierarchy of needs is a good theory to refer to when undertaking effective teaching and learning.
